Meet the team – Keelie, AJPA Secretary

Keelie has been on the committee as secretary since late 2023, keeping everyone organised and shipshape (mostly)!

Tell me about yourself and how you came to be a puzzler?

I used to puzzle with my grandma in front of the fire while watching westerns and old time musical movies. Those were some of my favourite childhood memories. I didn’t puzzle for years when I grew up, then slipped back into it when the kids got big enough not to pull my puzzles off the table. Some call it an obsession, I call it a healthy hobby.

How did you get involved with the AJPA?

I saw an ad for the 2022 Vic state comp – two blocks from my house and on my birthday – what could be better! I rocked up, came 7th and left. In 2023, I wondered if there was another competition. And there was, but it was sold out. I volunteered on the day hoping to get a waitlist ticket. I met some of the committee who were all so lovely and I thought, I’d like to be part of that. I put my hand up and was asked if I’d like to be secretary.

What do you enjoy most about the puzzle community?

At every event, I have a moment where I look around and I can’t quite believe that puzzling is something you can do as a shared community experience. There’s a very unique joy in sharing your slightly geeky hobby and love of puzzles with a room full of people that love it as much as you.

I love how friendly and welcoming everyone is.

Has anything surprised you about being involved with the AJPA?

I’m surprised at just how much goes on behind the scenes and the commitment from all the volunteers to make our events happen.

Do you have a favourite brand, type, or style of puzzle?

Laurence King is my absolute favourite brand. I love the images and the fit.

How often do you get to puzzle?

In an ideal world I would puzzle every day, but alas my work and children do tend to get in the way.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering for AJPA?

I work in communications and I try not to neglect my family in favour of puzzles.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to improve their speed puzzling abilities?

Repeating the same puzzle with different techniques is really helpful. Practicing every day (not possible, but a girl can dream).
