Tips for a smoother day at state and national competitions

Here’s some information to help make your day at our events a success.

Check-in and arrival times

Check-in opens one hour before each competition and you must be seated 15 minutes before your division start time. Try to arrive with time to spare – we recommend arriving at at least 30 minutes before your event.

If you can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible. If the event is sold out, we may be able to sell your ticket on the waitlist (with enough notice).

What’s available on the day?

We usually have a puzzle swap, raffle, merchandise and basic refreshments available on site. We sometimes have spot prizes including for best dressed and encourage everyone to dress up.

There is usually a pop-up shop to buy puzzles. This will be confirmed in the lead-up to the event. We will also let you know whether refreshments are available in the venue or locally. If you’re competing in multiple events, you might consider bringing a packed lunch to save time.

What to bring

You’re welcome to bring any gear such as puzzle sorters, cardboard sheets, energy snacks, headphones – just make sure it doesn’t intrude on other puzzlers. Bring your AJPA membership card for a discount on merchandise, money for refreshments and your unwanted puzzles for the puzzle swap.

Some hints for a smoother day

Your table: Competitors have half a standard trestle table to assemble their puzzle on (pairs and solos). You will be assigned a table. If you have accessibility needs, contact us before the event.

Noise: There is some noise during the event so consider bringing noise cancelling headphones or listening to music if you are easily distracted. If you have sensory requirements, contact us before the event.

Keep your pair in the know: If you have a puzzle partner for pairs, please make sure they also know where to go.

When finished, leave quietly: We all puzzle at different speeds – while we encourage cheering, please pack up and move out of the puzzle area promptly after completing your puzzle.

Photos: We do take photos during the event which are published on our website and social media channels. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

Spectators: Spectators are very welcome and can attend for free!

Be kind: Remember that everyone involved in this event is a volunteer, so please be kind, courteous and patient.
